Protect Public Healthcare

Universal healthcare defines what it means to be Canadian. Our public system helps make Canada the just and compassionate country we aspire to. In fact, recent polling shows 85% of Canadians say health care based on need rather than income is a core Canadian value.

Right now, this pillar of our national identity is under attack.

As the Federal government invests tens of billions in new defence spending and corporate handouts, it has abandoned Pharmacare and allowed Provincial Premiers to recklessly neglect Public Healthcare necessities and bring in American-style two tier healthcare.

Canadians did not vote for privatization and healthcare cuts. Sign now to tell the Prime Minister and your local Member of Parliament to Protect Public Health Care!

Protect Public Healthcare Petition:

Dear Prime Minister Carney, Minister Michel, Minister Champagne and [LOCAL MP]

Public healthcare is a core Canadian value. It’s more than a source of pride; it defines who we are and what we stand for. Canada is a place where healthcare is a right, free and accessible to everyone who needs it.

Our public healthcare system must be protected in the coming Federal budget.

Many Provincial Premiers are neglecting their responsibility to properly disperse federal Public Healthcare funds, and pushing American-style two tier healthcare, prioritizing profit over care and straining the public system.

Canadians did not vote for privatization and healthcare cuts.

We urge you to act now—commit to protect Federal healthcare transfers to the Provinces in the coming budget. And act with urgency to enforce the Canada Health Act to end costly American-style two-tier healthcare.

Healthcare should not be on the cutting block.

Tommy Douglas speaking

Tommy Douglas is considered the father of Medicare, and has been proclaimed the “Greatest Canadian.” His political leadership was instrumental in building Canada’s universal healthcare system. He fought against the for-profit model and insisted on a system where care was based on citizenship, not the ability to pay.

Douglas always saw public insurance for medically necessary doctor and hospital visits as but the first phase of Medicare. His vision was to expand into pharmacare, home care, mental health, and dental care, and to focus public health care around primary and community care. Today, the DCLF carries his legacy and vision.
